Chapters At UGA

KAPPA ALPHA PSI

KAP
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded in 1911 on the campus of Indiana University. Comprised of functioning undergraduate and graduate chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the country, the fraternity is the crystallization of a dream.

Kappa Alpha Psi is the realization of a vision shared commonly by 10 founders. It was the vision of the astute men which enabled them to sow the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is available to, and now enjoyed by, college men everywhere, regardless of their color, religion or national origin. Kappa Alpha Psi is justly proud that its constitution has never contained a clause which either excluded or suggested the exclusion of a man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or national origin.

The Zeta Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, was founded April 16, 1971 by Walter Allen Sr. (from the Gamma Nu Chapter) and Joseph A. Johnson. The Zeta Iota chapter was founded with the aid of our mother chapter, Gamma Zeta (Fort Valley State University) and our sister chapter, Gamma Chi (Savannah State University). Each Zeta Iota Chapter line (stemming from the Fall 1971 charter line, “Sadistic Sixteen”), has continued to carry out the fraternity’s fundamental purpose of achievement. The Zeta Iota Chapter has come to produce lawyers, doctors, politicians, financial consultants, real estate agents, CPA’s and even professional football and basketball players. For example, Donald Perry (from the charter line “Sadistic Sixteen”) is the current V.P. for Chick-Fil-A and was the originator of the slogan, “Eat Mor Chikn.”

Dr. Reginald Jackson (from the line 13 N.U.P.E.) is a past Guy Levis Grant awardee, the highest award an undergraduate member may receive, and past Junior Grand Vice Pole march. His line brother, Damon Evans is the first Black Athletic Director for the University of Georgia and the Southeastern Conference. Past athletes include notable football players such as Guy McIntyre, James Brown, Dale Carver and George Brewer, as well as basket ball players including Lamar Heard and Donald Hartry both off whom were on the UGA only final four basketball team.

Currently, the Zeta Iota chapter excels and continues to maintain one of the NPHC highest GPA’s and ranks among the best in community service hours performed. The chapter volunteers with Big Brother/Big Sister, voter registration drives, the Red Cross Bone Marrow Drive, The Center for Violence Intervention, the Rites of Passage, the Athens Boys and Girls Club, Grandview Nursing Home, Holiday Food Drive, Angel Project, Thanksgiving can-A-Thon, Greensboro Dreamers and Alps Road tutoring. The chapter members are also involved in many on campus activities such as the Black Educational Support Team (B.E.S.T.), Arch Society, Order of Omega, African American Choral Ensemble (A.A.C.E.), UGA track and field, football and rugby. Furthermore, the Zeta Iota chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi remains the only NPHC organization at UGA to have its own fraternity plot. Thus it is only fitting that the Zeta Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi be the 2004-2005 Southeastern Province chapter of the year.
